What is it called when you add this accessory to fabric?

I think the term is "rivet"? I want to embellish a purse, some jeans, etc... And I recall there being a device you do with your hands to embellish stuff with a metal on, or gem, charm...and so on. Do you have any idea? I know I didn't explain that very well.
